When in Rome, Berlin, Santiago or Katmandu… and other hot and shady areas, follow these simple methods to avoid ending up with traveller’s diarrhea and other nasty bugs: support healthy bacteria in your gut by eating soured milk or soy products as locals do. The more good bacteria, the less bad’ns will cause trouble. Alleviate likelihood of obtaining a parasite by dousing food with lime, lemon, cider vinegar and drinking bitter teas like barberry. Eat pumpkin seeds, garlic and onions which have natural anti parasitic potential. Avoid buffering stomach acid with Tums and other antacids, as the acid will help protect the body from many parasites and infections.

To recover from a parasite see diet below

as all your muscles become loose and limp, slump over, like a raggedy Ann or Andy doll. notice the impossibility of being anything but relaxed as your body breathes deeply in and out for 10 minutes.

Fight the junk food cravings by carrying a power snack with you daily.  A couple of handfuls of organic raw almonds, dried peas/soynuts and sunflower seeds will provide fibre, essential fats and protein.  Organic dried blueberries, apricots or gogi berries will provide sugar, flavour and antioxidants.  The perfect snack for a busy day.

Abstain for 21 days. This is what it takes to sever addiction connection between brain and action centres. Go without carbs, alcohol, pain meds, cigarettes, pot and crack…at least twice per year if not forever.

Chinese medicine yin and yang theory states that drinking too many cold drinks especially a la glace will counteract, thereby accelerating internal heat. On these hot days, instead of downing icy drinks take diaphoretics that will act to initiate sweating response, causing your body to detoxify and cool itself. Cayenne water or herbal teas such as peppermint, elder, calendula, sage, wintergreen and yerba santa will do.

Admit it.  ‘fessing up to mistakes can release the burden of wanting perfection and help you integrate into the human race. Practice by disclosing one past error to a confident, big or small, today.

Lybrel- dont believe everything approved

May 23, 2007 · 3 Comments

As an Naturopathic Doctor I treat women who have estrogen related illnesses such as fibroids, endometiosis, chronic yeast infections, cysts and fertility issues. I treat women who feel they have suffered poor treatment due to negative effects of prescribed aka pharmaceutical estradiols (tumour promoting E2). These synthetic estrogens found in birth control pills like Lybrel, Alesse, etc. are similar to those in HRT binding to our estrogen receptors tightly, suppressing the body’s natural rhythms, promoting growths, tumours, pain and infertility.
A short follow up study of 1-2 years such as the one done with Lybrel is absolutely corrupt given that women often are being prescribed these medications for 5-10-20 of the most fertile years of their life. I, like my patients, believe that there ARE long-term effects on women’s gynecological and obstretical health from the over-prescription of estrogens. The naturopathic perspective is to treat using no harm and so I feel that suppressing the monthly ovulatory cycle with birth control pills (made from a pregnant mare’s urine) contribute to the fertility crisis North American women recently face. What are the repercussions of suppressing ovulations for cycles and cycle on end? What happens to blood linings that ought tobe shed? What are the repercussions of our body’s re/absorption of hormones and blood? Is there a wonder women are having a hard time conceiving when we are actively suppressing our fertility for years to decades at a time?
And what’s the effect on the next generation of women who’s mothers used harmful estrogens for decades of their lives?

There are other methods for contraception! It’s within us all to learn our own natural hormonal rhythms (cervical changes and fluid, BBT, charting cycle) so that the intake of exogenous estrogen is not necessary in order to control pregnancy. Women cannot rely on the pharmaceutical industry to protect them from problems down the line. We must educate ourselves and take control of our own body. This is eco, women and human-friendly birth control. Good luck!

Are you blood starved? If your bottom eye-lids (conjuctiva) are pale and your finger beds don’t return to pink after pressing on them consider this a form of blood deficiency.

Have your iron, B12 and folic acid blood levels taken.  B12 and folic acid shots can work wonders to improve energy, lift mood and return proper circulation, especially for veggies and vegans.

Seek satisfaction from nothing for ½ an hour per day.  Instead of looking to outside stimulus to fulfill you, lower blood pressure and reduce stress levels by being content with things are they are.

Lovingly respond to your liver’s calls.  If an intermittent or relatively constant twinge under your right rib is prodding you to tear at yourself this is your liver asking you to let it loose with bile promoting foods and herbs.  List to consume daily: organics-hot lemon water, carrots, dark leafy greens, millet, beets and dandelion root tea.

After years of binging and during pregnancy your liver is working overtime to metabolize all the extra chemicals, hormones and blood in your body. If you’re experiencing these symptoms in the absence of pregosny then soothe the workhorse organ by eating the above foods plus a liver detox product with rhubard, dandelion and milk thistle such as Liv-Tone by EhN.
