millie says AGE gracefully not gruesomely

AGE gracefully not gruesomely. who knows the definitive answer why marlon brando plunged from utmost physical beauty quickly over to the other side… using he, who was emotionally tormented (stress’ed), laden with diabetes (obese, sugared and pickled), had congestive heart failure (obese, oxidatively damaged) and cancer (mutated cell’ed) as a shockingly poignant example….one can envision AGE, despite its chemical complexities.

advanced glycation entities (AGE) are the result of a chemical process in the body that happens when a poor lifestyle (high fat, sugar, alcohol, smoking meets low fruits, veggies, antioxidants, fibre, exercise) greets middle age. what you get when you combine overdoses of sugar and with free-radicals in the long run. beauty one decade, beast the next. these lead to wrinkles, large pores and nevi in the nose, blindness from cataracts, clogs in the arteries leading to strokes and heart attacks and possibly cancer, of which marlon brando had…them all.

millie says get back on the bus

get back on the bus, gus. so you you had been thinking of fixing yourself a delicious dinner but when you get to the grocery store you realize how hungry you are and can only think about chips and cookies. so you manage to remember some of the items you need for dinner but take the first moment after paying to rip open the bag of sezchuan flavored ripple chips and bite into a german molasses cookie. while eating the junk on the way home you realize you had skipped breakfast that day and paid for it with a craving and a subsequent binge. dangerous. as a usual healthy eater who wants to care for yourself as best as possible, you a) call yourself a big fat pig and continue eating the big bag of chips as the world is hopeless anyway b) decide you dont deserve any dinner as you’ve clearly had enough calories for one day and drink water and tea for the rest of the evening c) forge on and make yourself a high protein and vegetable dinner with fish, lentils, tomoatos and cauliflower as you are obviously starving and really need to balance the sugar with some healthy food.

the answer is: (((((((((((((((((((((((((((((((((((((((((())))))))))))))))))(((((((((((((((())))))))))))))((((((C))))))))))))))))

millie says drink the bathwater

drink the bathwater. common knowledge it is that eating vegetables, legumes, whole grains, grass fed lean meats and wild fish is the terrain towards gathering good nutrition, but eating them all together in one liquid pot magnifies the benefits due to the concentration of nutrients left in the broth. the benefits of soups and stews vitamins and minerals go in the belly not down the drain as with steaming or boiling. to make a good flavorful soup from scratch rather than relying on oxo or other bouillon cubes boil leftover vegetables from the fridge or boil organic meat carcasses and bones for marrowing goodness. Keep in fridge or freezer until soup day. After browning onions, garlic, local grass fed lamb, a teaspoon of cumin, a cup of soaked pinto beans use this water in which to add the shiny new veggies from the farmer’s market. let cook in slow cooker for 6 hours, on stove top or in over for an hour or 4 depending on cut of meat and type of bean and recipe. to improve flavour of soups, add a strip of kombu instead of salt, use natural mineral salts such as fleurs de sel, himalayan, celtic or brittany sea salts, fry and pulverize seeds (dill, cumin, caraway, fennel) prior to adding water, use guiness, wine, chamomile or mint tea for stock, contribute fresh herbs and delicate leaves at the very end before serving (parlsey, basil, cilantro, mint), juice 1/4 lime into each bowl, dare a teaspoon of fresh chopped ginger, put a dollop of organic yogurt or sour cream before serving or remove some of the vegetables and bean and puree them before adding them back for more intense flavour and thicker consistency. when full, leave the noodles or rice but do not under any circumstances leave the broth.

use your best ingredients (fresh, local, organic, in season, grass-fed) to conquer some of these melodious harmonies.

millie says select superior salba seed

select superior salba seed. an ancient medicinal food related to the mint plant, Salvia hispanica L, was historically used by the aztecs who fed it to their messengers to give them running stamina. the white colored salba has been bred to be higher in nutrients than many other superfoods combined. nutty, gelatinous and satisfying this superseed is high protein, omega 3, fibre, magnesium, folate (folic acid), potassium, calcium, iron and vitamin C. satisfying as it cuts foods cravings, maintains blood sugar levels and encourages a positive mood, consider this a well rounded food supplement. Take in porridge, cereal, shakes, salads, yogurt, bread or by itself, 2 tablespoons reportedly contains 6 X more calcium than a glass of milk. so watcha waiting for, suck on salba.

millie says listen to your body

listen to your body. le corpus reacts to things in its environment for instance it responds to its external surroundings by relaxing at the touch of a loved-one, tensing at the touch of a creep. when it’s cold, sending signals to the brain to put a sweater on or go to the spa. similarly the body responds to its internal environment…with sluggishness and fatigue to a badly chosen meal, a rash or bowel irregularites to a poorly constructed diet, and fear-based anxiety to a shallow breathing regime. to improve overall health on the cheap, pay attention to what your bodis’ telling you in reaction to breathing, eating, drinking, resting, washing and other small vital actions . when changed to suit you this method can produce profound changes in your daily function and overall health will result.

millie says skip the cow but not the ‘milk’

skip the cow but not the milk. if a drop of dairy makes the eyes red, the skin itch, stomach curdle, bowels growl, keeps stool staying put or shoot out the yingyang, doesn’t mean milk is out of the question. many people are truly allergic to the protein casein found in cow, goat or sheep milk products, which can isolate socially and gastronomically. Others are sensitive to the lactose in dairy, not producing enough of the enzyme lactase to digest the carbodydrates in cow products. Options for this lactose intolerance include taking a supplemental enzyme called lactase, consuming lactose-free milks and milk products, taking goats and sheep milk products or turning to vegetarian-based milk substitutes. The benefits of going veG include consuming food items lower on the food chain, lowering inflammatory markers, reducing overall estrogen intake which benefits estrogenic conditions such as endometiosis, certain cancers, fibroids and BPH…and being able to look a jersey-girl in the eye with a clear conscious. slurp!

“Raw Milk”

A tasty lactose-free, vegan alternative to dairy milk.

1 cup soaked almonds (can also use oats, soybeans, rice, hemp seeds)
(Soak in a bowl with water in the refrigerator overnight and rinse before using)
3 cups water
Optional 1 vanilla bean, seeds scooped out
Optional 3-5 soft pitted dates (or soak hard dates in water for 1/2 hour) or
other sweetener to taste such as honey, dark maple syrup, stevia

To make raw almond milk blend the soaked almonds with the water until smooth. Then strain the mixture through a sprout bag, cheesecloth, or strainer into a big bowl. Save the pulp in a container and use for deserts or smoothies.

Put the almond milk back into the blender carafe and blend in the vanilla seeds and dates or other sweetener until smooth. This milk will last in the refrigerator for about 3-5 days. Shake well before using.

Use for drinking, on cereal, in baking, in cafe au lait. Not a suitable substitute for breastmilk, but young children can drink it as long as all ingredients agree. Use as base for lactose-free yogurt. See my yogurt recipe.

Raw nog recipe: Blend in a banana and use a pinch of nutmeg to make a festive raw-nog.

millie says push away the picking and pulling

push away the picking and pulling. touch is a necessary but oft’ forgot component of self-care. when alone with no one to cuddle some people turn toward “trich” or dermatillomania to quell a habitual anxiety impulse. Habit Reversal Training (HRT) involves reducing cause of stress, avoiding the trigger, becoming mindful of the habit, performing a muscular movement and reconsidering the impulse until it no longer is in the driver seat. self massage instead of picking provides the same principles as HRT or CBT in that it reduces stress, promotes relaxation and kindness for the self as opposed to shame, anger and isolation. rub a dub dub.

It’s easy to massage your own feet to refresh your body and mind daily. While sitting up, rest one foot on the other leg.

1. Put one hand on top of the foot and the other under the sole, then stroke smoothly from your toes to your ankles. Glide your hands back to your toes and repeat.

2. Support your foot with one hand and work on each toe individually. Squeeze it firmly, and gently stretch each toe with a gentle pull.

3. With one thumb on top of the other, do a line of firm pressures down the center of the sole and lines on either side. Then, with one thumb, do circular pressures on the arch and the ball of the foot.

4. Support your foot with one hand and make the other into a loose fist. Do knuckling movements all over the sole by rippling your fingers around in small circular movements.

5. Then, still holding the foot with one hand, hack the sole with your other hand, Flick your hand away the moment you touch the foot, so that the effect is light and springy.

6. Stroke around the ankle with your fingertips, as you stroke up toward the leg and gently as you glide back. Finish by stroking the foot as you did at the beginning.

millie says deny the great lie

deny the great lie. “born on the mountaintop” course creators Satyam and Freedom Malhotra have divised a psychology concept that asks us all to become aware of the love we seek and the methods we use to get it. are they healthy or not? these local brothers claim that the great lie is…. that we believe we need to prove ourselves in order to be worthy of love.

take a lesson from their book of creating awareness within and conjure the person from whom you seek the most approval……….on a large piece of paper write down in the centre “I will be loved just as I am” then write down “I need approval from……..”, then over the next week write down all thoughts and actions taken to seek approval and avoid rejection from that individual……shockingly time consuming!

millie says stockpile vitamin d

stockpile vitamin d. as the sun’s angle to the earth decreases create an inverse relationship to increase fish and/or vitamin D intake. a fat soluble vitamin, this nutrient preventer of bone diseases such as osteomalacia, rickets and some bone and skin cancers naturally occurs in animal products such as cold water fish, salmon roe, eggs and though not a natural source milk is fortified but usually not ice cream, yogurt or cheese. being fat soluble means that vitamin D can build up and be stored in the body so when taking the fish or oils of cod liver, salmon, albacore tuna, mackerel, halibut, herring, sardines, a mixture or pure source (no dyes, sugar or artificial flavours) vitamin D inconsistent vitamin consumers can take a minimum weekly dose of 7000 IU 1 time per week instead of 1000 IU 7x per week. vitamin D supplementation in some form is important for all people living in northern climates but even moreso for vegetarians and especially vegans. watch the bows of your toddler’s legs as an exaggerated bow could mean subclinical vitamin D deficiency or rickets.
