millie says pass the CAGE AUDIT

I once knew a guy who got over alcohol dependency with tablespoons of raw honey every time he wanted a drink.

do you pass the CAGE AUDIT? so you work hard, play harder. you’re an artist, musician, designer, cultural vector representing a minority of the thinking kind, not ‘class’ cuz da politically enlightened dont use that word. networking is part of the game; openings, parties and hopefully free booze. or maybe you daylight-moonlight as a corporati working long hours, spreading yourself thin, just to get to that next position of exclusive perks, keeping it together posturing yourself as hard working clever cool. maybe you have a family and the stress is higher at home than it is at work. or maybe you’re a student or you were a student and got lost between final exams and a job fair in whistler, alberta. or maybe you just got dumped, widowed, orphaned, fired, traumatized or injured, people say you’re fortunate to have survived that one, but you’re not feeling very lucky. you may wonder do you drink socially, socially considering your situation or do you just plain have a problem?

here’s the test, the CAGE questionnaire. a score of 2 or more will encourage you to the AUDIT self-test, The World Health Organization’s Alcohol Use Disorder’s Identification Test. 8 or more could be a reason to seek treatment or support- links below).

1) Two “yes” responses indicate that you should be investigated further. The questionnaire asks the following questions:

  1. Have you ever felt you needed to Cut down on your drinking?
  2. Have people Annoyed you by criticizing your drinking?
  3. Have you ever felt Guilty about drinking?
  4. Have you ever felt you needed a drink first thing in the morning (Eye-opener) to steady your nerves or to get rid of a hangover?

millie says know this echinacea

know this E-C-H-I-N-A-C-E-A and buy wisely. one would think the way that echinacea is marketed that it helps to prevent colds. in actual fact, due to many variations in the species, plant part (aerial parts are leaf and stem. roots are under ground), delivery and dosage, it’s actually a trickier plant to consume properly than most others; knowing what, when and how to take echinacea is necessary for good results. the purple cone flower, member of the asteraceae is a great immune booster with mild anti viral properties due to phenol content. though known for warding off colds, it actually may be better used for convalescing; getting over that cold that seems to drag on’an’on or for those with a tendency for infections; cold, yeast, urinary, bronchial, etc. of the several species, angustifolia, pallida and purpura have been studied most. research is inconsistent on which ones work the best although the roots of pallida and angustifolia may ward off and the aerial parts of the purpurea plant may help recover faster; get a mixed tincture to cover all the bases. water extracts such as teas and dry capsules do not perform well for echinacea as the properties need to be diluted in alcohol for strong potency. Take 30 drops every 2-4 hours at the very first onset of cold for a couple of days. If the cold comes on anyway, stop until starting to feel better. if the malady lingers then take 30 drops every 3-4 hours for a week to raise immune system. don’t take it if auto-immune condition or on immune suppressing drugs. but most importantly do not waste money on shoddy echinacea or that’s how you’ll continue to feel. pooped.

millie says make curds and whey

warning: EXTREME health food recommendation:

make curds and whey. miss muffet ate hers sitting on a tuffet since she had time but even if you dont muffet a tuffet for your duff-et you can still eat this probiotic delicacy. these days the commercially prepared version uses renet from the cow’s stomach and calls it cottage cheese with the solid being the curd, the liquid being the whey… but then they wash away the whey so it dont taste sour but they darn near ruined it cuz it dont have no probiotic in it, mama! better to make this mixture of sweet and sour at home. allow a quart’a milk or buttermilk sit on your kitchen counter in a mason jar for 3 days driving up the healthy bacteria content- that’s it. when the milk solids separate from the liquid you got yourself curds and whey. instead of waiting three days you can also take a cup of milk add a teaspoon of apple cider vinegar and watch it happen in front of your very eyes but best to do it right. next step put the curd through a cheese cloth or stocking letting it drip even more whey out from under it for a period of 12 hours or so. the solid creamy mass before you is…voila home made cream cheese. the left over whey is a definite sour sup of healthy dose bacteria can be used to make bread, pickles or just drunk sweetened or not. see below for more whey recipes. extreme.

millie says tap to heal

tap to heal. there once was an organ who dwells in the chest behind the breast bone or sternum as those detail oriented folks say. lying close to the heart, made stronger by self-love, self-care, joy, prayer and hope it was devoted to helping the body heal itself. its name was thymus gland, an endocrine organ committed to the activation of fighter and helper cells synthesized in the bone marrow. thymus gland would spring into action telling specific white cells to go to the area of weakness, infection when repair and defense was needed. this was a big job especially when it resides within the body of tired, stressed, overworked, overdrugged individuals. thymus gland told me to relay a message to you so that you would enable its ability to heal your body. if it could talk it would say “tap me to heal; I need you to be relaxed to function well; tap me to heal right at the breast bone with the tips of your fingers; coordinated arm and leg movements strengthen me such as swimming, yoga, brain games, marching; tap me to heal gently but with intent; I am nourished by antioxidants, sleep, probiotics, and astragalus; tap to heal me heal you.”

millie says shroom it up

shroom it up. sometimes thought of simply as ‘filler’ but mythically and more acurately known as ‘food of the gods’, mushrooms are not simply tasteless clouds of puff that cause creep within our tummies. these mysterious creatures, that are actually something between animal and plant are the purifiers of the forests and fields, similar to algae of the sea. they take decayed and toxic substances from nature’s carpet and release soil fertilizing nitrogen so that further plants can grow. Although one should never take a chance on eating unknown fungus, the edibles and medicals, wild and cultivated, are quickly being revealed as superfoods. with a taste that’s bland and even musty mushrooms contain the complement of essential amino acids, making them prime protein for vegetarian meals. Also rich in minerals including the antioxidant selenium and immune fighting properties. although thought to have negative effects on candida and yeast sufferers many shrooms such as osha, maitake, shitake and reishi can actually benefit immunocompromised conditions such as colds, flus, infections, skin conditions and even cancer due to their immune modulating and anti-viral properties. ask your local expert mycologist about the anti-psychotic benefits of the magic ones. schroom vroom.

pace the backdoor-trots. signs of increased peristalsis in absence of medical diagnosis include eruptive, disruptive, loose, watery, undigested, non-formed and explosive stools. many reasons may exist for decreased transit time including stress, virus, parasites, stimulants, history of medication use and food sensitivities. to curb Montezuma’s revenge bulk up with soluble and insoluble fibre found in psyllium husk, practice deep breathing exercises-10 breaths at 10x per day; replenish good bacteria with powdered probiotics-acidophillus and bifidus; remove aggressive dairy and other food or drug sensitivities; cut the coffee and cigs, take teas or capsules mades from herbs known to slow that spasm of the colon such as licorice, fenugreek and slippery elm. so no more need to rush to the cry of cock-crow. phewf!

millie says forget the flu shot

flu shot schmu schmot. only in special populations are people likely to become dangerously ill from the flu (Hemophilus Influenza Virus type A-numbered strains are mutating constantly). the immunocompromised living in tight quarters with other immunocompromised; nursing homes, hospices, hospitals and shelters may effectively take the flu shot to avoid becoming sick since sickness could of ten lead to death or a worsening of a current state of health.

the rest of us are better off getting sick in most cases as illness turns over our immune system allowing the white blood cells to mount a response, kill it and gain long term memory and a good reputation from having done that. the flu shot does not provide long term immunity from strains of influenza whereas getting the actual flu does. some studies have shown that the flu shot given en masse may be economically feasable saving dollars from time off work, but does not benefit general health. instead of the flu shot consider protecting yourself and family the old fashioned way: increasing the immune system though 9-10 hours of sleep, vitamins contained in herb teas, lemon and honey, soups from root veggies, greens, fish and meat, avoiding white flour and sugar, zinc losenges on a full tum, reducing stress, getting plenty of fluids (no coffee or beer).

encourage digestion with castor oil.  Taken internally castor oil is a mildly toxic cathartic or strong laxative that causes violent spasms of the intestines subsequently expelling the bowels with violent force so much so that it can actually be used a last resort to induce labour in post dates babies.  Used externally however castor oil is a gentle stimulus for the immune system of the digestive tract.  peyer’s patches are part of the MALT system found in the intestines and make up anywhere from 60-80% of the immune system.  when stimulated with castor oil packs or a gentle rub of the abdomen with castor oil proper dexoxification is maintained in our bowels stimulating the immune system to fight off viral, bacterial and fungal pathogens.  Castor oil rubs can be done daily before bed on infants, children, pregnant persons without the use of a heat source.  Castor oil packs include a castor oil soaked cloth and a heat source such as not water bottle, warm towel or heating pad can be done daily on adults as a relaxing nighttime routine while pondering the immunity in our bowels….

let kids get sick. recently Tylenol, Dimetapp and other makers of children’s cold and flu medications have been taken off shelves due to adverse events and even deaths. giving Tylenol to suppress it trains the body over time NOT to mount a fever, prolonging the duration and severity of colds over time plus dosing child with liver toxic drugs not recommended for optimal elimination and metabolic function. while childhood fevers, a sometimes scary symptom of a cold or flu but not an illness itself, cause sleepless nights for parents, the benefits of letting children get fevers far outweigh the risks.

Fevers are a natural healthy response that elevate the core body temperature so that virus and bacteria can be cooked to death. mounting fevers between 38 and 42 degrees Celcius, up to 105 F help the child turn over immune system, help prevent diabetes 1, fight the virus or bacteria and actually provide a healthier immune system for the next time a pathogen is caught. In otherwise healthy people, the body also has a upper limit set point that will prevent a fever spike so high that the body actually self combusts. If child is burning, restless or uncomfortable with fever put in a lukewarm, tepid bath until the fever comes down a couple of degrees- about 20 minutes, and keep child bundled and comfortable with lots of fluids- water and herbal teas like chamomile, peppermint or ginger. while crying and complaining are normal signs, warning signs to go to hospital are a listless child, not able to move, willing to drink, able to pee, or be alert. Plus research shows that children who have febrile seizures are more intelligent than others.

Quell a queasy stomach with some spicy ginger.  an old home remedy is to drink flat ginger ale but this short cut has more sugar and less ginger than it’s worth.  keep the good, toss the bad with some real stomach soother known to stimulate the intestines, promote production of saliva, digestive juices, and bile. It may even have a stimulative effect on the immune system.  the next time you or your child is fighting a sore tum tum whether from motion sickness, indigestion, appetite loss or virus: 1 teaspoon of minced ginger, 1 teaspoon of lemon, 1 teaspoon of unpasteurized honey, 1 cup hot water.

note: Always replenish good bacteria lost from diarrhea with 10 billion live probiotic cells for the next 3-10 days.
